Dust to dust.

I know it is a classic, but it just boggles my mind trying to comprehend how old the earth is. And then my mind gets even bogglier thinking about the universe. Infinity is a mighty concept.

I'm reading a book at the moment about the big bang and how astronomers discovered that we are in the milky way and that there are millions of other galaxies out there. We appear to be so so insignificant in the vastness. It makes me think of religion and I question god all over again. If he exists then why are we tucked away in such wasted vastness?

Do you believe in an almighty entity? I personally do not. It certainly makes it easier to comprehend what you excellently put as the 'wasted vastness'. If there is a god, however, what would the universe be to him? A personal art project? What other reason could he possibly have for creating such an odd thing?

We humans tend to need to feel important, and knowing that we are but a small piece of infinity - hardly noticeable - makes us confused. I think the thought that an ever-present entity has been used to counter this. If we imagine that we are his finest creations, then the universe in a way belongs to us. Without disrespecting religious folks, that is to me just a way to kid oneself.
